FEATURED POSTER:
This poster is from October of
1981. Just less than one month earlier, Ric Flair had won his
first world heavyweight championship, defeating Dusty Rhodes in
Kansas City. His first series of title defenses in the
Mid-Atlantic territory over the fall of 1981 (and in outlying
cities Crockett ran like Toronto Canada and here in Cincinnati)
were against his own cousin who had become his arch rival - Ole
Anderson. The two had feuded throughout the summer of 1981.
The 2nd main event featured new
United States Champion Sgt. Slaughter. Slaughter was new to the
area and had recently won a tournament in Charlotte NC, and was
starting to defend the title against a wide array of opponents.
One of his first challengers was veteran Johnny Weaver. It had
become almost standard operating procedure for new stars when
they came in the area, they had to get past Weaver. Once they
had, they were automatically seen as legitimate by the fans.
Other major names that were matched with Weaver to help
establish their street cred with Mid-Atlantic fans over the
years were such notables as Austin Idol, Greg Valentine, and
Roddy Piper. Slaughter's early wins over Weaver helped
immediately establish him a legitimate main eventer and worth of
holding the United States championship in the fan's eyes.
