Wahoo McDaniel vs. Ric Flair
The vote in this category was the most lopsided of any
category in this year’s awards! The Gateway voters
resoundingly gave this feud their overwhelming support as
the greatest feud of 1976.
This feud was not only voted the best for 1976, but a
strong argument could be made that it was the greatest feud
in Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling history. This one had
everything. The aging veteran versus the young upcoming
star. The humble one versus the brash and cocky youngster. A
major title belt to fight over. Even and always competitive
matches. And perhaps most importantly in the voting for the
year of 1976, a feud which lasted for the entire calendar
year. Fans who saw any matches between Ric Flair and Wahoo
McDaniel during 1976, truly saw some of the greatest bouts
in the history of professional wrestling.
Ric and Wahoo wrestled countless times in 1976 under
every set of stipulations imaginable. And the voters never
tired of the matches between these two. The Mid-Atlantic
Gateway in a landslide vote elects Ric Flair versus Wahoo
McDaniel as its Feud of the Year for 1976!
RUNNER-UP---PAUL JONES vs. BLACKJACK MULLIGAN
What a great feud this was, and yet it only comes in a
distant second to Ric versus Wahoo!
This feud didn’t blaze for the entire year of 1976, but
it definitely had its moments. Blackjack winning the U.S.
belt for the first time in March. Jones coming back with his
shocking upset of Mully in October. Mully upending Jones for
the belt again in November, and having to resort to a
technicality in December to continue to hold onto it.
Perhaps this feud worked so well because you had the
smallish but determined Jones having to try to beat the odds
and defeat a man so much bigger in Mulligan. These two
played the "David vs. Goliath" roles to
perfection.
No doubt, this was a feud to remember in the year of
1976!
