Wrestling Art: Arn Anderson on the cover of Mid-Atlantic Magazine

Art by Robby Bannister

Back on November 27, Robby Bannister presented his first throwback-style art cover to the Mid-Atlantic Gateway, a tribute to the old issues of Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Magazine sold at arenas back in the 1970s and 1980s.

The first one featured Blackjack Mulligan as United States champion back in 1976, when Mulligan was the top heel in the Mid-Atlantic territory for Jim Crockett Promotions.

The second installment jumps ahead almost a full decade and features the wrestler who would become known as "the enforcer" Arn Anderson.

A member of the legendary Anderson family in wrestling, Arn was a cousin of Gene, Lars, and Ole Anderson in Anderson mythology, although he was briefly recognized at times as a brother, and even initially a nephew when Ole Anderson first introduced him in Georgia Championship Wrestling in 1983.

I like to think this could have been a cover in the spring of 1985 when Arn was relatively new in the territory. It wouldn't be long before Arn would have always had a title belt around his waist, whether it be the National Tag Team title, NWA World TV title, or NWA (or WCW) World Tag team title.

Arn was a great singles competitor as TV champion, and was most famously a member of the legendary Four Horsemen. But he is best remembered for his tag team success, holding the Southeastern tag team titles with "Mr. Olympia" Jerry Stubbs, the National Tag titles with Ole Anderson, and the NWA/WCW World Tag team titles with Tully Blanchard, Bobby Eaton, Larry Zbyszko, and Paul Roma.

Arn sadly never had a cover of Mid-Atlantic magazine, but With Robby's artistic vision we can now imagine what such a cover would have looked like.

Wrestling Art: Blackjack Mulligan on the Cover of Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Magazine

Art by Robby Bannister

Last week, we told you about a forthcoming series of artistic faux magazine covers based on 1970s and 1980s designs of Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Magazine, published at the time by Jim Crockett Promotions and sold in arenas as the event program. The art is courtesy of Robby Bannister.

The first in that series celebrates one of the great U.S. Champions of that era, Blackjack Mulligan. It's based on one of the classic images of Mulligan wearing the famous Unites States Heavyweight championship belt that appeared in one of the 1976 magazines. The cover design, fonts, header, etc. are based on the original 1976 issue with Paul Jones on the cover (Vol. 2 No. 4.)

Mulligan's only appearance on of the original art covers of that era was a 1978 issue where he shared the cover with Dick Murdoch. The two were the Texan tag team combination that called themselves the M&M Boys. I've always thought there should have been a cover with Mulligan as U.S. champ. He dominated the territory as the top heel in 1976 and 1977, feuding with Paul Jones, Dino Bravo, Bobo Brazil, and Ricky Steamboat over the title belt.

With Robby's artistic vision, we can now imagine what such a cover would have looked like.

Crockett Cup '85 Finale: Briscos vs. Rock & Roll Express (Final Falls)

THE FINALS
by Mike Rickard

Mid-Atlantic Gateway Contributor

UPDATED BRACKETS

THIS WEEK'S MATCH:
Rock-n-Roll Express
vs. Jack & Jerry Brisco (Oklahoma Cowboys)
SECOND & THIRD FALLS

Tournament Final - 2 of 3 Falls
(Tournament Match #47 - Second and Third Falls)

The 1985 Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Tag Team Tournament is underway. Wait, did you just say 1985? It’s time to take a look at one of wrestling’s biggest events from the mid-80s and see what it might have been like with a few historical alterations. What if Jim Crockett Promotions hosted its tag team tournament the Crockett Cup in 1985 and included teams from promotions outside the National Wrestling Alliance (“NWA”) including the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), the American Wrestling Association (AWA), New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW), All Japan Pro Wrestling, and more? In this case, you’d have 48 of the greatest tag teams in the world battling in a winner take all tournament for $1,000,000 and the prestigious Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup Trophy.

The first round saw 32 teams competing to advance to round two with 16 teams making it in. Round two followed as these 16 teams battled the 16 top-seeded tag teams that received a first-round bye. Round three continued with the remaining 16 teams slugging it out with eight making their way to round four. Round four saw things heat up further as eight teams battled to determine “The Final Four.” Now, two teams remain as only one team will walk away with $1,000,000 and the prestigious Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup Trophy awaits.

Sixth Round Rules: Here are the rules for the round six of our tournament. While a pool of referees from the NWA, AWA, and WWF were appointed for the tournament’s first five rounds, things are going to be different this time around due to the wild finish to round five’s second match between the Fabulous Freebirds (Michael “P.S.” Hayes and Terry “Bam Bam” Gordy) and the Oklahoma Cowboys. There, Road Warrior Hawk and “Precious” Paul Ellering attempted to attack the Cowboys, with Hawk unmasking Roy as Jerry Brisco.

The final match is taking place at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex in Greensboro, North Carolina on Sunday April 28. The Briscos won the first fall in the finals under suspicious circumstances and now, they’re one fall away from winning it all. In case you missed the special rules for the finals, this match is two-out-of-three falls with no time limit. The only way to win a fall is by pinfall or submission. Andre the Giant serves as special ringside enforcer but he has no authority to officiate in the match or tell the referee if he sees any chicanery.

FIRST FALL (Catch up if you missed it!)

SECOND FALL
Ricky Morton starts things out for the second fall as Robert Gibson is still smarting from getting crotched on the top rope. Jack Brisco starts off and is smiling, rubbing his hands. He invites Ricky for a test of strength and Ricky moves in, only to kick Brisco in the gut. Ricky unloads with lefts and rights, David Crockett says Ricky looking to pay Brisco back for what happened to Robert Gibson in the first fall—and who can blame him? Bob Caudle points out Ricky Morton better not let his quest for revenge cloud his judgment or he could end up losing the match and the tournament due to a rash mistake.

Harley Race warns Morton about the punches as Morton shifts gears on rams Jack Brisco’s head into the turnbuckle. Robert Gibson is slowly getting to his feet in the babyface corner. Jerry Brisco tries to enter the ring but Harley Race warns him off. Bob Caudle says this is a no disqualification match but it’s not a Texas Tornado Match and Race seems intent on maintaining the rules of a tag team match. David Crockett scoffs and says he doesn’t know what to think after the first fall. Bob Caudle asks David how he’d like to referee a high-stakes match. David days that will never happen as he likes calling the matches, not officiating them. Flying head-scissors by Morton sends Brisco down and Jack gets knocked down again after Morton dropkicks him. Cover on Brisco for a two count. Jack rakes the eyes, following up with a forearm then a big right hand. Jack whips Morton into the Briscos’ corner but Ricky slugs Jerry, knocking him back. Jack charges in but Ricky leap frogs over him and Jack crashes into the corner. Monkey flip by Ricky followed by an elbow drop to Jack’s left leg. Ricky drops another elbow on Jack’s leg then goes for the figure four leglock! Jerry runs in and breaks it up with a stomp to Ricky’s head.

Robert Gibson is back in the game and runs in dropkicking Jerry Brisco. Robert takes Jerry and whips him head first into the cage. Ricky Morton goes to reapply the figure four leglock but Jack Brisco rolls him up for a small package. However, Harley Race is ordering Jerry and Robert back to their respective corners. Jerry Brisco is busted open! Jack Brisco gets up and starts yelling at Harley Race. Ricky Morton takes advantage of the distraction and whips Jack into the Rock-and-Roll Express’ corner. Robert has a boot reserved for Brisco’s head as Morton introduces Jack’s head to the flat of Gibson’s boot. Tag to Robert as they whip Jack into the ropes and catch him with a double elbow smash. Cover on Jack but he kicks out at two. Robert slams Jack to the mat. Jack throws a punch but Robert blocks it and fires off a punch of his own, knocking Jack down. Robert takes Jack and whips him into the cage. David Crockett says if the Briscos thought they were in for an easy win, they’re wrong. Ricky and Robert are taking it to them! Jack is bleeding now as Gibson whips Brisco into the R&R’s corner. Tag to Ricky who slugs Jack while Robert restrains him. Snapmare as Ricky slows things down for a moment before whipping Jack into the ropes again. High cross body-block by Morton by Jack somehow dives out of the way. Brisco grabs Morton’s hair and rams his head into the Brisco’s top turnbuckle.

Jerry and Jack deliver a double suplex to Ricky. Jack tag Jerry and the Briscos whip Ricky into the ropes. Double back-body drop by the Briscos. Jerry covers Ricky but Morton kicks out at two. Jerry yells at referee Harley Race about the speed of the count but Race dismisses his complaint. Jerry gets into Race’s face as David Crockett says it looks like Harley is ready for an altercation. Morton rolls up Jerry while he’s arguing with the referee but Brisco kicks out. Brisco drops a knee on Morton’s head and tags his brother in. Jack kneelifts Morton then picks him up, whipping him into the corner. Series of forearm shots to Morton. Morton is dazed as Jack continues with the forearm shots. David Crockett says the Briscos are probably counting their million-dollar prize by now. Jack whips Ricky into the ropes near the Rock-and-Roll Express’ corner and Gibson capitalizes. Blind tag by Gibson as Jack hits another forearm on Ricky. The Briscos haven’t seen the tag but Harley Race has. Jerry comes in and picks Ricky up for some sort of double-team maneuver. However, Robert dropkicks Jack in the back, sending him into Jerry. Ricky drops down to the mat as Gibson hits a victory roll on Jack, holding him down for the 1-2-3 as Ricky keeps Jerry from making the save.

Fall Two Winners: The Rock and Roll Express (45 minutes and 23 seconds)

THIRD FALL
Jerry Brisco kicks Ricky in the head. The Briscos run after Gibson and throw him head first into the steel cage. Ricky runs at them and gets the same treatment as Race orders one of the Briscos back to their corner. Jack is slow to move so Race shoves him down to the mat. Jack gets into his corner; Jerry picks up Ricky and slams him down to the mat. Brisco twists Gibson’s right leg then drops an elbow onto it. Another elbow drop to the leg as Brisco follows up by placing Gibson’s right leg on the bottom rope. Gerry drops a knee but Gibson somehow gets out of the way! Robert Gibson rolls out of the way as Jerry Brisco drops an elbow this time. David Crockett wonders if Jerry is starting to panic. Bob says Jerry is a seasoned veteran but Brisco might end up choking on that million-dollar prize. David says that sounds familiar but he can’t place it. Gibson surprises Brisco with a single leg takedown, even as Gibson is favoring his right leg. The ring has been cut off now as Gibson hip tosses Jerry into the Rock-and-Roll’s corner. Tag to Ricky who drops an elbow onto Jerry’s right leg. Jerry catches Ricky with a thumb to the eye when he goes for the figure four leglock. Jerry rams Ricky’s head into the turnbuckle in a neutral corner then follows up with a kneelift right to the face. Morton goes down as Brisco covers him for a two-and-a-half count. Morton is bleeding even more now as Brisco picks him up for a suplex but Morton flips over him, rolling him up for a two-count. Brisco kicks Morton but Morton catches his foot and spins him around for an atomic drop. The fans are on their feet as Ricky kicks Brisco in the hamstring, knocking him down.

Nearly an hour has elapsed in the match and all four men look like they’ve been through a meat grinder. Ricky locks in the figure four leglock on Jerry Brisco as the crowd cheers. David Crockett says the roof is almost shaking.  Jack staggers over to break things up, but Robert Gibson is already in the ring and he beats Brisco to the punch. Brisco rakes the eyes and whips Gibson into the ropes. Both men collide, hitting each other’s heads as they fall to the mat. Bob Caudle says they look like they might be out cold. Harley Race ignores them and focuses on Ricky and Jerry. Morton is bleeding heavily as Brisco fights to flip him over. However, he can’t so far. Morton continues the hold but he seems to be fading himself. David Crockett says Ricky has lost so much blood that it’s a miracle he’s still conscious. Morton falls on his back as Race counts to two, but Morton gets his shoulders up in the nick of time. Jerry is writhing in pain now as Robert and Jack are out cold. Jerry watches as Ricky’s shoulders slump to the mat and Race counts 1… Jerry gives up!

Fall Three Winners: The Rock and Roll Express (One hour and two minutes).

1985 Crockett Cup Winners: The Rock and Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson)
The Rock-n-Roll Express celebrate their huge win. Harley Race raises their hands in victory as Andre the Giant comes into the ring. The cage is packed as babyface after babyface enter the ring. There’s Ricky Steamboat and Jimmy Snuka, the British Bulldogs, Jimmy Valiant and Bugsy McGraw, the Texas Outlaws, and many more. The babyface wrestlers lift Morton and Gibson on their shoulders. Andre the Giant has a bottle of champagne and pours it over the Rock-n-Roll Express.

Bob Caudle says what a long road it’s been to the finals. It’s been a magnificent experience calling this tournament alongside you David. David thanks Bob and says "Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport…the thrill of victory…and the agony of defeat…the human drama of athletic competition…This was the 1985 Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup Tag Team Tournament.”

Bob Caudle tells David that sounds vaguely familiar. “Don’t stop me Bob, I’m on a roll!” David says as he tells Bob he’s written something else that sums up those who came up short.

“Without training, they lacked knowledge.
Without knowledge, they lacked confidence.
Without confidence, they lacked victory.”

Bob Caudle tells David he’s heard it all now as not only has David appropriated the introduction to ABC’s Wide World of Sports but he’s pilfered a quote from Julius Caesar. David says it’s time to head to the ring.

The babyfaces step aside as Mama Crockett and NWA President Jim Crockett Jr. enter the cage with the Crockett Cup trophy and an over-sized check for one million dollars (just don’t pull an Austin Idol with it). The Rock-and-Roll Express hold the trophy up high as the fans cheer them on for their hard-fought win.

Meanwhile, the Brisco Brothers have staggered out of the ring, catching a number of dirty looks from the wrestlers in the ring. Jack is groggy and Jerry is limping as they look around panic-stricken. David Crockett says Bruiser Brody and Stan Hansen are making their way to the ring. Bob Caudle adds they’re not the only ones. Road Warrior Hawk and “Precious” Paul Ellering are on their way to the ring too. The Briscos panic and look around. Jack and Jerry run to the back as a cameraman follows them. A teenage fan runs up to the Briscos and tells them their cab is waiting.

The Briscos run for their lives and jump into a cab as their pursuers watch the cab driving off. Jack looks at Jerry and says “That was too close for comfort. Get us out of here cabbie.” The doors lock and Jack and Jerry look through the plastic protective barrier as Ole Anderson turns around and says “First, me and some friends want to talk with you about that Georgia Championship Wrestling stock.”

Special Thanks to Dick Bourne for letting me post the tournament at the Mid-Atlantic Gateway. It’s been a tremendous privilege and an honor to be able to write for a wrestling site that helps preserve the memories of a promotion I still consider the greatest wrestling promotion from the 70s and 80s and arguably, of all time.

I’d also like to acknowledge Todd Stutts who figured out the Oklahoma Cowboys identities in March 2021! Nice detective work Todd!

Final Match in Crockett Cup '85! Briscos vs. Rock-n-Roll Express

THE FINALS
by Mike Rickard

Mid-Atlantic Gateway Contributor

UPDATED BRACKETS

THIS WEEK'S MATCH:
Rock-n-Roll Express vs. Jack & Jerry Brisco (Oklahoma Cowboys)

Tournament Final - 2 of 3 Falls
(Tournament Match #47 - First Fall)

Sixth Round Rules: Special Stipulations Announced
Here are the rules for the round six of our tournament. There’s a lot of confusion going on but announcers Bob Caudle and David Crockett will hopefully have some answers.

The final match is taking place at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex in Greensboro, North Carolina on Sunday April 28. Let’s join Bob Caudle and David Crockett at ringside. The fans are cheering as the main event is about to take place. Bob Caudle says it’s the moment weeks in the making and that the fans will finally see who the best tag team in the world is. David Crockett says the tournament isn’t without controversy, but NWA President Jim Crockett wants to make sure things end conclusively and without outside interference. Bob adds he understands Jim Crockett Jr. has made special arrangements and asks David to explain them. David says that the match is going to be held in a steel cage with a special referee and a ringside enforcer. In addition, the match is two-out-of-three falls with no time limit. The only way to win a fall is by pinfall or submission. Andre the Giant serves as special ringside enforcer but he has no authority to officiate in the match or tell the referee if he sees any chicanery.

Pre-Match Interviews
Bob Caudle tells David Crockett that Johnny Weaver met with the Brisco Brothers earlier at an undisclosed location. David Crockett adds Jack and Jerry have lots to worry about as Stan Hansen is gunning for them as are “Precious” Paul Ellering and Road Warrior Hawk. Jack and Jerry smirk as “The Buzzsaw” interviews them. Johnny asks the Briscos if they have anything to say for themselves. Jerry laughs and says, “We have a lot to say, but it boils down to this—we fooled everyone. We fooled you, we fooled the fans, and we fooled all the wrestlers who stepped into the ring with us.” Jack Brisco adds “Who said you can’t fool all of the people all the time?” Jack laughs and tells Johnny “They say we’re wild and we’re mean and we’re creating a scene. We’ve gone crazy. Let me tell you something Johnny Weaver, the Briscos are one step away from the million dollars and the Crockett Cup and there’s no way two long-haired punks like the Rock-n-Roll Express are going to beat them.” Jerry adds that he and his brother were world champions when Morton and Gibson were stealing hubcaps. Jack finishes by saying “We’ve been wrestling Oklahoma tornadoes for years and the Express won’t know what hit them.”

Tony Schiavone is backstage with Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson of the Rock-n-Roll Express. Tony asks how it feels to be one step away from tag team immortality? Ricky tells Tony the fans know the Rock-n-Roll Express don’t make promises they can’t keep. It’s been a difficult battle as they’ve faced three of the toughest teams in professional wrestling today. They know the biggest obstacle is ahead with those two snakes the Brisco Brothers, but with the fans still standing behind them, they know they can win. Robert says the fans in the Mid-Atlantic region have welcomed them like they’re their own and they won’t let them down tonight. Ricky adds that after he and Robert have won the tournament, they’re going to show the fans how they rock and roll all night and party every day. Rock-n-roll will never die!

The ring announcer tells the fans that a guest referee has been appointed—eight-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion Harley Race. Serving as the special enforcer outside the cage—“The Eighth Wonder of the World” Andre the Giant. David Crockett says the tournament has seen some wild moments but if those two men can’t maintain order, who can? Bob Caudle notes it’s apparent that NWA President Jim Crockett Jr. wants this tournament to end with no interference and with a conclusive winner. The announcer introduces the first team, Jack and Jerry Brisco. The Brisco Brothers jog out to the ring and they’re all smiles. The fans boo the Briscos. Next are the Rock-n-Roll Express who come out to Kiss’ “Rock-n-Roll All Night.” The crowd is near-deafening.

Jack starts the match against Ricky Morton. The two lock up with a collar-and-elbow tie-up but Brisco quickly applies a Fireman’s Carry. Waist-lock attempt by Jack, but Ricky counters with a go-behind and slams Brisco down to the mat. Ricky goes after Jack, but the former NWA World Heavyweight Champion catches him with an arm drag. A second arm drag sends Morton down as Brisco quickly follows up with a bodyslam. Jack laughs and motions for Morton to lock up again. David Crockett says he doesn’t know if it’s a good idea for Ricky Morton to try and match wrestling holds with someone the calibre of Jack Brisco. The two go to lock up again but Ricky catches Jack in a side headlock. Brisco tries to run the ropes, but Morton puts the breaks on. Snapmare as Morton takes Jack down to the mat and reapplies the side headlock. Brisco is complaining that Morton grabbed the hair. Referee Harley Race does a quick check but doesn’t do anything. Bob Caudle says Ricky Morton is showing he has some mat wrestling skills of his own.

The two tumblers lock up again as Ricky arm drags Jack. Jack gets up and Ricky goes for an arm bar but Brisco slugs him with a forearm. Elbow to the head as Jack whips Ricky into the Briscos’ corner. Tag to Jerry. The Briscos deliver a double hip toss to Ricky. Jerry whips him into the heel corner and tags Jack in. The Briscos both whip Morton into the corner then deliver a double body slam. Side suplex by Jack as he covers Morton for a two-count. Snapmare by Jack as he applies a front facelock, taking Ricky down to the mat. Ricky scrambles to escape as Jack applies the pressure. Ricky gets to his feet but Brisco grabs the hair, pulling him down. Harley Race sees it and warns Brisco he’ll disqualify him if he sees it again. Bob Caudle says there are no disqualifications in this match so Harley is either confused or trying to bluff the Briscos. David Crockett says Harley Race has bent or broken a few rules in his day which means he’s more apt to spot infractions. Brisco rakes Morton’s eyes then whips him into the heel corner yet again. Tag to Jerry who delivers a kneelift to Morton. Jerry applies an abdominal stretch in the center of the ring. Morton is in trouble. Bob Caudle notes that the Briscos have been working Ricky over for some time and the longer he stays in that hold, the more likely it is he could get hurt. David says that with this being a two-out-of-three falls match, the last thing the Rock-and-Roll Express want is to go into the second fall with one or both of them injured.

Ricky is struggling to escape but Jerry has the hold locked in tight. Things are looking bad for Morton but the fans begin rallying, clapping their hands as they chant “rock and roll, rock and roll!” In an incredible display of willpower and balance, Ricky hip-tosses his way free, sending Jerry to the mat. Ricky tumbles and rolls to his corner ring as Jack Brisco runs in to intercept him. Hot tag to Robert who dropkicks Jack, knocking him down. Jerry gets up and eats a dropkick as well as Ricky staggers in his corner.

Jack and Jerry go after Robert but he grabs their heads and delivers a double noggin-knocker. Ricky comes in as Robert takes Jack and Ricky takes Jerry. The Rock-n-Roll Express whip the Briscos into each other, knocking them down as Harley Race starts a five count. Ricky gets back to his corner as Jack staggers back to his. Bodyslam by Robert followed by a flying head scissors. Robert whips Jerry into the ropes and goes for a dropkick, but Jerry holds onto the ropes, with Gibson landing on his head. Jerry hits Robert with a big left then whips him towards Jack, who has a boot outstretched. Tag to Jack as the Brisco lift Robert up for a double suplex, driving him down hard into the mat. Near-fall but Gibson is still in it. Jack stomps Gibson in the back then rolls him over, dropping an elbow on his knee. Tag to Jerry as Jack holds Gibson’s leg. Jerry dives off the second rope with an elbow to Gibson’s knee before Morton can get in. Morton starts slugging away on Jack and Jerry as Harley Race makes him get back to his corner. David Crockett says Harley Race is an eight-time world heavyweight champion but as a referee, he stinks. Bob Caudle tells David that maybe someday he’ll get a chance to step into the ring as a referee. Meanwhile, the Briscos whips Gibson head-first into the cage as he falls to the mat. Jerry drops another elbow on Gibson’s leg then applies the Indian Deathlock. However, Ricky comes in and stomps Jerry in the head. Ricky picks Jerry up and whips him into the ropes, dropkicking him down to the mat. Harley Race forces Ricky back to his corner and as he does, Jack lifts Robert up for an atomic drop and crotches him on the top rope. Jerry gets Race’s attention as Jack covers Gibson for a three-count while Gibson wonders if he’ll be singing soprano for the rest of his life. David Crockett is flabbergasted at the injustice that just took place. The Briscos have stolen the first fall and now they’re one win away from the million-dollar prize and prestigious Crockett Cup trophy.

Fall One Winners: The Brisco Brothers (25 minutes and 3 seconds)

David Crockett is right. With one fall under their belt, the Briscos are in the catbird seat as we head to the second fall. Be sure to come back for the remaining installment in the 1985 Crockett Cup tournament!

Crockett Cup '85 Semi-Final #2: Freebirds vs. Oklahoma Cowboys

THE SEMI-FINALS

UPDATED BRACKETS

THIS WEEK'S MATCH:
The Feeebirds vs. The Oklahoma Cowboys

Semi-Final Match #2
(Tournament Match #46)

Round four saw things heat up further as eight teams battled to determine “The Final Four.” Now, four teams remain as things get even closer to the final round where $1,000,000 and the prestigious Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup Trophy awaits.

Fifth Round Rules:
Here are the rules for the round five of our tournament. A pool of referees from the NWA, AWA, and WWF have been appointed for the tournament and randomly selected for each match. The fifth-round matches have a sixty-minute time limit and are sanctioned under NWA rules (throwing an opponent over the top rope is an automatic disqualification). The matches are one fall with a win obtained by a pinfall, submission, count-out, or disqualification.

The fifth-round matches and the finals are being held at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex in Greensboro, North Carolina. The fifth-round matches will take place on Saturday April 27 and the final match on Sunday April 28. Your commentators for the matches are Bob Caudle and David Crockett, but as always, you never know when a special guest will show up.

The Rock-n-Roll Express (Robert Gibson and Ricky Morton) defeated Jim Cornette’s Midnight Express (“Beautiful” Bobby Eaton and “Loverboy” Dennis Condrey) in the first match of round five and now it’s time to see who will face the Rock-n-Roll Express in the finals. The mystery team known as the Oklahoma Cowboys (Tex and Roy) are scheduled to face the Fabulous Freebirds.

Pre-Match Interviews
Bob Caudle tells David Crockett that Johnny Weaver is ready to interview the Oklahoma Cowboys. However, when the camera gets backstage, the Cowboys are nowhere to be seen. Instead, Paul Ellering and Road Warrior Hawk are backstage with Johnny Weaver. Ellering states NWA President Jim Crockett Jr. hasn’t done anything with the information he’s brought him so he’s going to handle things himself.  Johnny Weaver says that Mr. Crockett has already made it known that if anything happens to disrupt the tournament, the Road Warriors will be fined $250,000 and barred from the National Wrestling Alliance for one year. Ellering says his men are going to do what they have to do to get revenge on the team of Bruiser Brody and Stan Hansen for injuring Animal, but that will happen down the road. Tonight, they’re going to prove the Oklahoma Cowboys set them up for the attack on Stan Hansen—even if they have to beat it out of Tex and Roy.

Tony Schiavone is backstage with the Fabulous Freebirds. Michael Hayes says it looks like people are finally start to understand what Badstreet is all about. The further you go down the block, the badder things get. They just beat up those two Texas Outlaws and now they’re ready to teach the Oklahoma Plowboys a lesson. Tony points out the Freebirds’ Buddy Roberts used a metal water pitcher to win the match. Roberts says Dusty Rhodes looked thirsty so he offered him a drink. Hayes looks at Gordy and asks “’Bam Bam’ you know only two things come out of Oklahoma, right?” Gordy laughs and Schiavone says he doesn’t like where this is going. Hayes laughs and says when the Freebirds are done with this tournament, there’s a lot people won’t be liking.

The Oklahoma Cowboys come out to mostly boos. David Crockett points out that Tex and Roy keep looking over their shoulders. Bob Caudle says both men have made some dangerous enemies. David wonders if this will affect the Cowboys’ ability to focus on the match at hand. The song “Freebird” plays as David Crockett tells Bob Caudle it’s one of his favorite songs from the 1960s. Bob tells David there were many great songs from the 60s, but “Freebird” was released as a single in 1974. The crowd boos as Hayes, Gordy, and Roberts trot out to the ring. David Crockett says the Freebirds didn’t win over any fans with the way they beat the Texas Outlaws in round four. Bob adds, “That’s right David and this is going to be a real battle of the bullies.”

The Oklahoma Cowboys (Tex and Roy) vs. The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael “P.S.” Hayes and Terry “Bam Bam” Gordy) with Buddy Roberts
Bob Caudle reminds the fans that thanks to the Freebird Rule, any two Freebirds can wrestle in this match and here it will be Hayes and Gordy taking on the Cowboys. Hayes starts off against Tex. World Class Championship Wrestling referee David Manning will be officiating this match. Manning advises both teams on the rules then signals for the bell.

Michael Hayes starts off against Tex. Collar and elbow tie-up as both men vie for control. Tex manages to back Hayes up against the ropes. Referee Manning signals for a clean break and Tex gives it to Hayes. The two men lock up again with Rex again backing Hayes up against the ring ropes. Manning signals for a clean break but Tex goes to drop a forearm across Hayes’ chest. However, Hayes gets out of the way and as Tex’ forearm bounces off the ropes, Hayes grabs his opponent in a side headlock. Hayes applies the pressure and keeps the hold locked in for a minute before Tex is able to bounce off the ropes and escape. Hayes catches Tex off the ropes with a shoulderblock, knocking him down to the mat. Hayes drops an elbow on Tex then picks him up, bodyslamming him. Hayes picks up Tex and whips him into the ‘Birds’ corner where Terry Gordy is waiting with an outstretched boot. Tag to “Bam Bam” as the ‘Birds whip Tex into the ropes, delivering a double elbow to Tex’ chest. Tex falls to the mat as Gordy covers him for a two count. Gordy goes for a front facelock but Tex fires off a big left. Gordy responds with a right hand, knocking Tex into a neutral corner. Gordy whips Tex into the Freebirds’ corner and tags in Hayes. David Crockett says in just five minutes the Freebirds have isolated Tex and look to be on their way to a quick win. Bob Caudle says the Cowboys may be distracted by the threat hanging over their head. David says that Ellering and Hawk’s threat is like the Sword of Damascus. Bob Caudle points out that David’s allusion is particularly apt, but that he’s probably thinking of the Sword of Damocles. David looks at Bob and asks, “Gosh, Bob is there anything you don’t know?” David observes that the Freebirds’ teamwork is amazing. Gordy tags Hayes. Gordy grabs Tex by the arms as Hayes jumps off the second rope with an elbow knocking Tex down. Cover on Tex but he’s close to the ropes and puts his foot on the rope, forcing a break to the count.

Hayes goes to whip Tex into the ropes but Tex reverses! Tex goes for a hip toss, but Hayes blocks it and reverses with a hip toss of his own. Hayes does the Moonwalk as some of the fans cheer. David Crockett says the Freebirds’ philosophy rubs people the wrong way, but they don’t mind seeing them beat down the Cowboys. Tex charges at Hayes but Hayes delivers an arm drag takedown. Hayes goes back to the side headlock as Tex fights to get to his feet. David points out Tex seems frantic now. Tex is in the side headlock, but he forces his way into the Cowboys’ corner. Tag to Roy. Roy comes in, ready to deliver an axe-handle, but “P.S.” mule kicks him and starts throwing punches. Knee to the back by Tex sends Hayes through the ropes onto the floor. Tex gets back to his corner as Roy goes out and gives a complimentary back adjustment to Hayes by bodyslamming him on the concrete. Buddy Roberts comes over but doesn’t do anything. Bob Caudle says Buddy would love to interfere but he doesn’t want to see him and his fellow Freebirds knocked out of the tournament on a disqualification. Roy whips Hayes into the ring and tags in Tex. Both men grab one of Hayes’ arms and sling him into their corner. Tag to Roy. Roy picks up Hayes and drops his back across Tex’ knee. Cover on Hayes but Roy only gets a two count. Roy picks up Hayes and rams his head into the top turnbuckle. Tag to Tex who comes off the second rope with an elbow to Hayes’ head as Roy restrains the Freebird. Tex grabs Hayes’ right leg and drops an elbow on it. Tex places Hayes’ leg on the bottom rope and drops a knee on it. Tex pulls Hayes into the center of the ring and drops an elbow onto Hayes’ right knee. Kneebar by Tex on Hayes. Hayes manages to reach the ropes, forcing a break. Tex stomps at Hayes’ right knee then lifts him up, delivering a shin-breaker. Hayes holds onto the top rope to try and gain his balance but Tex clips him in the right knee, sending Hayes down to the mat. Terry Gordy has enough and comes in slugging away at Tex. The referee grabs Gordy and orders him to his corner, but the big man isn’t going anywhere.

While Manning contends with Gordy, Tex holds Hayes’ right leg and Roy drops an elbow onto it from the second rope. Tag to Roy, who goes to work twisting Freebird Hayes’ right leg. Hayes flails away with punches but can’t connect with Roy. Roy picks up Hayes and delivers a vertical suplex. Cover by Roy, but Gordy runs in to break up the pin. Referee David Manning watches as Gordy goes back to his corner. Roy drags Hayes by the bum leg and tags in Tex. Tex delivers an under-hook suplex to Hayes and goes for the cover again. Gordy comes in but Roy is there to beat him to the punch. Actually, more like get punched as “Bam Bam” clobbers him with a big right hand. Manning argues with Gordy and Roy and as he does, Buddy Roberts gets on the mat apron, yelling at Tex. Tex swings at Roberts, but Buddy blocks the punch and connects, knocking Tex down. David Crockett says he’s heard of the twelfth man in football and the Freebirds have the third man. Seeing his opportunity, a dazed Michael Hayes crawls towards the center of the ring. The referee tells Roy to get back in his corner as Gordy sees Hayes trying to make the tag. Gordy gets back to his corner and watches as David Manning forces Roy back into his corner. Tex gets to his feet and dives after Hayes, but Gordy has pulled Hayes back to the Freebirds’ corner. Bob Caudle admires the clever tactics by Gordy. He says that when teams have been together as long as the Freebirds have, it’s almost like they have telepathy. Manning turns around as Hayes tags in “Bam Bam” and the crowd erupts in cheers.

Tex is on his hands and knees begging for mercy. Gordy kicks him in the gut then lifts him up with a big scoop slam. Gordy bounces off the ropes and drops an elbow on Tex. Cover but he only gets a two count. Gordy delivers a swinging neckbreaker to Tex and covers him again. This time, Roy runs in and makes the save. Gordy gets up and whips Roy into a neutral corner. Michael Hayes is back on his feet and Gordy makes the tag. The Freebirds whip Tex into the ropes and Hayes delivers a back body drop and Gordy catches Tex, going for a reverse piledriver. However, Roy clips Gordy in the knee and Gordy and Tex go down. Hayes is still nursing his weakened right leg but grabs Roy. It’s an all-out brawl now as all four wrestlers are looking for the edge while David Manning struggles to restore order. “Bam Bam” is unloading with forearm smashes across the chest of Tex. On the other side of the ring, Hayes has Roy in the corner and he’s slugging away. The fans begin screaming as David Crockett asks what’s going on. Bob Caudle points out that Paul Ellering and Road Warrior Hawk are on their way to the ring and neither man looks happy. The Oklahoma Cowboys don’t see either man as they’re too busy fighting the ‘Birds. Buddy Roberts doesn’t know what to make of the situation so he grabs a chair. Hawk comes close to Buddy who swings the chair, only for Hawk to get out of the way and Roberts smashes the chair into the ring post instead. Hawk slugs Roberts then rams his head into the mat apron. “Bam Bam” sees this and goes out after Hawk. The two brawl as Paul Ellering says something and points to the Cowboys. Gordy isn’t listening and continues fighting with Hawk. Ellering grabs the chair and smashes it over Gordy’s back. Hawk rams Gordy’s head into the steel post. The Road Warrior sees Tex and points his finger at him. The fans cheer as a number of preliminary wrestlers run out. Rocky Kernodle, the Italian Stallion, Joel Deaton, and Ben Alexander try to restrain Hawk and Ellering but they aren’t having an easy go of it. Back in the ring, Tex blindsides Hayes, clipping him in his weakened leg. Tex locks in the Indian Deathlock as Gordy fights through the preliminary wrestlers to get back into the ring. As he does, Roy stomps him in the head. The referee checks on Hayes who seems passed out and the with Hayes’ shoulders down, the referee counts 1-2-3 as the Cowboys score a controversial win.

Winners: The Oklahoma Cowboys

Terry Gordy stumbles into the ring and goes after Tex. Roy runs over and clobbers Gordy with a knee that knocks him back out of the ring, but Road Warrior Hawk reaches into the ring and grabs Roy’s mask. More wrestlers are running in as the Cowboys look for an exit. David Crockett points out it looks like Ricky Steamboat, Jimmy Valiant, Bugsy McGraw, and Jimmy Snuka are here. Hawk continues pulling at Roy and nearly has him out of the ring. However, Roy’s mask comes off and Hawk gives a shocked look as do all the fans. It’s one of the Brisco Brothers! The Cowboys use their window of opportunity and slide out of the ring, running for their lives as the wrestlers restrain Ellering and Hawk. Gordy checks on Hayes as Roberts staggers into the ring.

Round five is over but what will happen in the finals as the Rock-n-Roll Express face the Oklahoma Cowboys? Be sure to join us next time for the fateful finale.

Crockett Cup '85: The Semi-Finals Begin with a Timeless Match-Up

THE SEMI FINALS
by Mike Rickard

UPDATED BRACKETS

THIS WEEK'S MATCH:
Rock-n-Roll Express vs. The Midnight Express

Semi-Final Match #1
(Tournament Match #45)

The first round saw 32 teams competing to advance to round two with 16 teams making it in. Round two followed as these 16 teams battled the 16 top-seeded tag teams that received a first-round bye. Round four saw things heat up further as eight teams battled to determine “The Final Four.” Now, four teams remain as things get even closer to the final round where $1,000,000 and the prestigious Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup Trophy awaits.

Fifth Round Rules: Here are the rules for the round five of our tournament.
A pool of referees from the NWA, AWA, and WWF have been appointed for the tournament and randomly selected for each match. The fifth-round matches have a sixty-minute time limit and are sanctioned under NWA rules i.e., throwing an opponent over the top rope is an automatic disqualification.

Pre-Match Interviews
Tony Schiavone interviews the Rock-n-Roll Express outside the babyface locker room. Robert Gibson tells Tony he wants to thank the fans for the great reception they’ve given them and they’re looking to live up to their expectations. Tonight they’re facing a team that they’re no strangers to—the Midnight Express. Unlike their previous opponents, the Rock-n-Roll Express know all of Jim Cornette’s tricks and they’re ready. Ricky Morton adds, “That’s right baby. Jim Cornette better watch out because that no-good sissy mamma’s boy is going to be spitting out teeth if he tries sticking his nose in our match. Ricky says he’s not going to hoot or holler because the fans have learned the Rock-n-Roll say what they mean and mean what they say. He and Robert know the Midnights are tough, but they’ve got the fans on their side and a 425-pound double dropkick that can end a match in the blink of an eye. Rock-n-roll is here to stay and rock-n-roll will never die.

Johnny Weaver is interviewing Jim Cornette and the Midnight Express (“Beautiful” Bobby Eaton and “Loverboy” Dennis Condrey). Cornette says cream rises to the top which is why the Midnight Express have made it to the semi-finals. Paul Ellering shows up and he tells Cornette he has something important to say. He says people have been accusing him and the Road Warriors of taking out Stan Hansen. “Precious” Paul says that Hawk and Animal will take care of Hansen and Brody face-to-face and that someone else took out Hansen—someone with something to gain. Jim Cornette and the Express look on as Ellering says he’s got more to say but he’ll be back after the first semi-final match.

Cornette looks at Johnny and says, “Precious” Paul is out playing Columbo but if he interrupts the Midnight Express’ interview again, he’s going to look like Ironsides. Cornette says there’s a lot of sore losers out there and the latest will be the Rock-n-Roll Express after “Beautiful” Bobby and “Loverboy” Dennis get through with them. Cornette tells Jimmy Cornette to have those million dollars ready because he’s bringing it home to Mama Cornette for some pin money. She’s going to tell him “You done a good job son” and congratulate the Midnight Express on their latest win.

The Rock-n-Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) vs. The Midnight Express (“Beautiful” Bobby Eaton and “Loverboy” Dennis Condrey) with Jim Cornette

Jim Cornette grabs the microphone from the ring announcer and announces that this is the battle between the real express, the Midnight Express and the fake express—the Rock-n-Roll Express. Prepare to see the phonies get what’s coming to them. “Rock-and-Roll All Night” plays as Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson slowly walk through the crowd, hugging female fans and high-fiving male fans. Bob Caudle says the Rock-n-Roll Express have become the crowd’s favorites. David Crockett speculates what would happen if the Express ever came to the Mid-Atlantic area. Mid-South Wrestling referee Carl Fergie checks both teams for signs of any irregularities. David Crockett says Fergie should check Cornette’s tennis racket as there’s something fishy about it. He says it’s definitely wouldn’t pass muster at the U.S. Open.

The bout starts off with Robert Gibson and Bobby Eaton circling each other in the ring. After several feints, they lock up in a collar-and-elbow tie-up. Both men scramble for control until Gibson gains control with a big right hand. Fergie warns Gibson about the closed fist and Gibson puts Eaton in a headlock. Snapmare by Gibson takes both men to the mat as Gibson continues with the headlock. Eaton goes for a cradle as Fergie counts to one, but Gibson quickly gets back in control. Eaton struggles to escape and gets to his feet, whipping Gibson into the ropes. Gibson comes off and knocks Eaton down with a shoulderblock. Dennis Condrey runs in and Gibson sends him into the Rock-n-Roll Express corner with a hip toss. Ricky Morton slugs Condrey as he gets up. Both Eaton and Condrey get to their feet only to get knocked down as Gibson and Morton deliver two perfectly-timed dropkicks. The Midnight Express roll out of the ring and go for a group conference with Jim Cornette. Cornette pats them on the back and hugs them as the fans boo the heels and their manager mercilessly.

Robert Gibson lowers the second rope and motions for the Midnights to get into the ring. Carl Fergie starts a ten-count and Eaton gets in at eight. Eaton tags in Condrey who goes to lock up with Gibson but finds himself in a headlock. Gibson drags “Loverboy” Dennis to the babyface corner, tagging in Morton. Gibson restrains Condrey’s arms as Morton slugs Dennis right in the mush. Fergie warns Ricky as David Crockett points out the Rock-n-Roll Express are starting off aggressively. Bob Caudle says that’s understandable but with a million dollars at stake, you don’t want to be going home on a disqualification loss. Bodyslam by Morton sends Condrey crashing down into the mat. Morton drops an elbow on Condrey then applies a side headlock. Condrey gets his leg to the ropes, forcing a break. The ring announcer states five minutes have elapsed in the match with 55 minutes remaining.

Condrey is getting to his feet as Morton moves in towards him. Condrey catches Ricky with a punch to the breadbasket. Condrey gets to his feet and rakes Morton in the eyes before whipping him into the ropes. Condrey delivers an elbowsmash to Morton’s chest, knocking him down. Condrey drops a knee across Morton’s head. Condrey bounces off the ropes and drops an elbow but no one is home. Wasting no time, Morton applies a side headlock to Dennis, tightening the hold as Condrey seems helpless to escape. The only thing he can seem to do is to try and reach the heel corner.

Condrey tries to make the tag as Bobby Eaton extends his hand only for Morton to kick it. Eaton rubs his hand then sticks it out again, only for Morton to kick it again! Eaton is getting upset and Condrey is getting nowhere. Eaton holds out his hand again, only to get kicked a third time. David Crockett laughs at the spectacle and Bob Caudle adds that if Morton and Gibson can keep their opponents flustered, they’re well on their way to a victory. He has enough and runs in, only for Ricky to grab him into a head scissors while he has Condrey in the headlock. Morton rolls both men to the mat, knocking them senseless. The Midnight Express slam their fists into the mat as Jim Cornette slams his tennis racket onto the mat apron.

The Midnights get into the ring as Ricky tags in Robert. Robert grabs Condrey in a headlock, but doesn’t have a strong enough grip and Condrey whips him into the ropes. Eaton knees Gibson in the back as he bounces off the ropes and Gibson goes down. Condrey drops an elbow on Gibson then tags in Eaton. “Loverboy” Dennis chokes Gibson while Eaton kicks Robert in the head. Jim Cornette gets up on the mat apron and argues with referee Carl Fergie. Meanwhile, the Midnights lift Gibson up and drop his neck over the top rope. Ricky Morton has seen enough and runs in as Cornette alerts the referee. Fergie sends an angry Morton back to his corner as Cornette hands the tennis racket to Condrey and Dennis slams the handle into Gibson’s gut. Bobby Eaton then climbs to the top rope and delivers a flying elbowsmash on Gibson. Cover on Gibson as Fergie turns around and leaps to the mat apron 1,2, …Gibson kicks out.

Eaton begins choking Gibson as Fergie starts a five-count. Eaton breaks at four. Legdrop across the neck by Eaton as Gibson writhes on the mat, clutching at his throat. Eaton picks up Gibson and rams his head into the heel corner’s top turnbuckle. Tag to Condrey as both members of the Midnight Express unload on Gibson with lefts and rights. Carl Fergie gets in and starts another five-count. David Crockett says the referee needs to break things up. Who appointed this guy as referee? Bob reminds David that his brother selected a pool of referees from the various territories participating in the tournament and that Carl Fergie was randomly selected. David says he's going to talk to his mom about that.

Ten minutes have passed in the first match of the semi-finals. Back in the ring, Eaton holds Gibson as Condrey bounces off the ropes with a clothesline. However, no one is home as Gibson manages to slip out and Eaton goes down! Gibson rolls into his corner and makes the tag to Ricky Morton. Ricky runs in and dropkicks Condrey, knocking him back into a neutral corner. Condrey charges out only for Ricky to deliver a beautiful arm drag takedown. Condrey gets a second arm-drag takedown as Morton locks in an armbar. However, “Loverboy” Dennis rakes the eyes, forcing Morton to break. Condrey slugs Morton as Ricky tries to get his bearings. Condrey punches Morton again as Carl Fergie moves in, admonishing Condrey on his pugilism. Condrey ignore the referee and throws a big right hand but Morton blocks it and knocks Condrey down with a punch of his own. Ricky bounces off the ropes and drops a knee to Condrey’s head then locks in the figure four leglock. Condrey is in trouble as Ricky has the hold locked in the center of the ring. Condrey is fighting to get to the ropes as Morton continues applying the pressure. Finally, Bobby Eaton runs in and stomps Ricky in the head.

The referee tells Eaton to get back in his corner while Ricky bounces off the ropes. Jim Cornette trips Morton with the racket and Robert Gibson chases after Cornette. Meanwhile, Eaton is still arguing with the referee so Dennis Condrey hears opportunity knocking and he throws Morton over the top rope, an automatic disqualification had the referee seen it. Robert Gibson gives up on chasing Cornette and gets in the ring, shouting at Carl Fergie as he points to Condrey. The referee asks Condrey is he threw Morton over the top rope and he shakes his head, with Dennis pointing to the middle rope. Gibson continues arguing as Bobby Eaton slides outside the ring, grabbing a steel chair and cracking it over Morton’s back. Morton slowly gets to his feet and Eaton shoves the chair into Morton’s stomach, sending him back to the floor. Jim Cornette directs traffic as Eaton throws Morton into the ring.

The announcer reveals 15 minutes have elapsed so far, with 45 minutes remaining. David Crockett says he’s never seen the Rock-and-Roll Express in such bad shape before. Bob Caudle asks, “what about their last match against the Minnesota Wrecking Crew?” David shouts that the Midnight Express have taken cheating to a new level and it’s going to take a miracle for Ricky and Robert to win the bout. The fans are chanting “Rock and Roll, Rock and Roll” as Condrey grabs Morton by the hair and throws him into a turnbuckle. Bodyslam by Condrey and a cover, but Morton kicks out at two. Condrey starts choking Morton, breaking at the four count. Stomp to the head by Condrey as he lifts Morton up then whips him into the heel corner. Tag to Eaton. “Beautiful” Bobby whips Morton into the ropes and goes for a back body drop. However, Morton finds the wherewithal to boot Eaton in the head. Both men go down in the center of the ring. Eaton pulls himself up by the ropes and bounces off the ropes with an elbowdrop but Ricky rolls out of the way. Another elbowdrop misses as Ricky rolls out of the way again. Ricky dives to his corner and makes the hot tag as Robert Gibson comes in.

Robert Gibson whips Eaton into the ropes and hits a big back body drop. Gibson whips Eaton into a neutral corner and charges in, hitting a monkey flip on “Beautiful” Bobby. Gibson continues bouncing Bobby around the ring, this time throwing him into the ropes and going for a Victory Roll. 1, 2…no, Dennis Condrey breaks the pin with an elbow drop on Gibson. Condrey rolls out of the ring as Jim Cornette yells something at a dazed Ricky Morton, who is barely standing in his corner. Morton takes the bait and starts jawing with Cornette. Condrey runs over and hits Morton with a double axe handle from behind.

Back in the ring, Gibson and Eaton are trading punches now as things have broken down. Gibson has Eaton in the corner and climbs the first rope, battering Eaton with punches as the crowd counts after every punch. Dennis Condrey comes back into the ring and knees Gibson in the back before getting back into his corner. Condrey watches as Jim Cornette diverts the referee’s attention. Condrey sneaks back into the ring and drops a forearm on Gibson’s back while Eaton clears out the cobwebs.

20 minutes have elapsed as the action continues. Ricky Morton tries to get back into the ring but he’s moving slowly. Jim Cornette screams at Carl Fergie as Dennis Condrey reaches into his boot and produces a chain, wrapping it around his right arm. The Midnights whip Robert Gibson into the ropes as David Crockett shouts that Dennis Condrey has a chain. Gibson comes off the ropes and ducks under Eaton and Condrey’s clothesline attempt. Undaunted, the Midnights bounce off the opposite ropes. However, Ricky Morton grabs Condrey’s leg from outside the ring, tripping him up. In the meantime, Gibson bounces off the opposite ropes and hits a Lou Thesz Press on Bobby Eaton, covering him for the 1-2-3 as Morton grabs Condrey’s leg, preventing him from making the save.

Winners: The Rock-n-Roll Express (Gibson and Morton advance to the finals!)

Round five’s first match is over and now one match remains to determine which other team will advance to the finals. Join us next time as The Oklahoma Cowboys (Tex and Roy) take on The Fabulous Freebirds.

Backstage, Johnny Weaver is with NWA President Jim Crockett Jr. and “Precious” Paul Ellering. Ellering says he’s been digging around and he discovered something interesting about the attack on Hansen. Ellering brings in “Handsome” Jimmy, “The Boogie Woogie Man.” Ellering says Valiant has something interesting to say about the Wall Street Journal that was supposedly found next to Stan Hansen.

Valiant comes in and says he saw the newspaper on the ground and picked it up because he wanted to read the funnies. Imagine his surprise when he learned The Wall Street Journal has no comic strips. Ellering tells Valiant to quit clowning around and tell Crockett what he saw. “The Boy from New York City” tells Ellering to watch his step or he’ll get a fat lip. Valiant tells Ellering and Crockett that he saw a masked wrestler drop the newspaper and run off before Valiant could tell him he’d dropped his paper.

Ellering asks Crockett if anyone found a newspaper near Hansen when he was attacked. Crockett says no. Ellering points out that the Oklahoma Cowboys claimed there was a Wall Street Journal found and says how would they know? Jim Crockett raises his eyebrow. Ellering warns Crockett he’d better look into this or he’s going to have some serious problems on his hands.

They mystery behind the insidious attack on Stan Hansen continues but all eyes will be on round five’s second match as the fans will learn whether it’s the Oklahoma Cowboys or the Fabulous Freebirds advancing to the finals!
