Match 1
Rufus R. Jones & Mark Youngblood d. Tony Russo & Bill Howard
Tommy Young is the referee for the hour. Caudle provides the roll call of champions. Jones pins Russo after the “Freight Train” shoulder block and headbutt.

-Jimmy Valiant video
Replay of the same video they aired last week.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Jimmy Valiant
Valiant is in the Christmas spirit. A kiss for Caudle. More talk about reindeer milk. Valiant sees a giant gift. Valiant is touched Caudle got him a gift. But nope! It’s the Paul Jones poster that he plans to give away. Valiant borrows Caudle’s pin and draws a goatee. Valiant asks how to spell “K Mark.” This is WWF TNT quality humor.

Match 2
Don Kernodle (w/Gary Hat) d. Rick McCord
Kernodle gets the pin with the clothesline off the second rope. During the match, Caudle was reviewing the rest of the show. It sounded like he was going to say The Road Warriors would be there, but the audio cut out, replaced by crowd noise. Unknown if this was the original tape or a Network edit.

Match 3
The Assassins d. Keith Larson & John Bonello
Caudle reminds us that Valiant defaced Paul Jones’ portrait. Bonello, who has been with Crockett for a few months, would be best known as a referee for the WWF, particularly in Ontario. He worked a few WrestleManias. In 1992, he was sentenced to 18 months in jail for hiring a hitman to take out his wife (it didn’t work). He’s doing well here against The Assassin. To a point. Assassin 1 finishes him off with a knee drop off the top rope. The replays showing one point of the match, but not the finish move.

Match 4
Non-Title: Dick Slater [Mid-Atlantic champion] d. Mark Fleming
A shellacking by Slater. Caudle says coming soon: Tommy Rich and Junk Yard Dog. Slater wins with a fist drop.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Paul Jones
Jones is excited to give away his poster. Caudle is shaking his head, knowing what’s about to happen. The poster, with crumpled wrapping emerges. Jones unwraps it and goes nuts to see what happened to his poster. Jones’ acting is decent. Caudle stooges off Jimmy Valiant. Jones says Valiant’s gone too far and he’ll pay for it. And, we’ll pay for it for the next four years.

Match 5
Tommy Rich d. Golden Boy Grey
Just like last week, the Tommy Rich match is taped from 11/21/83 in Greenville. Stu Schwartz is the referee for this match. This also aired on the 12/24/83 World Wide Wrestling. Thesz Press secures the win for Rich.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Kelly Kiniski
This was in lieu of local promos.  Kiniski tries, he just isn’t good. No emotion. His brother is doing well as an amateur, a possible Olympic wrestler for Canada.

-Comment from Paul Ellering & The Road Warriors
This is in front of the World Wide Wrestling set, probably taped 12/07/83. Ellering says they are challenging Steamboat & Youngblood. Hawk has some nasty words for the World champs. “The ring is the four corners of doom, brother.” Animal is a little more serious in his threats. These guys were way different than anyone else in Mid-Atlantic.

Match 6
Non-Title: Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood [World Tag Team champions]
d. Gary Royal & Hans Schroeder
First appearance by Schroeder in recent memory. Caudle is gushing about the Road Warriors. Angelo Mosca joins Caudle. He appears on the inset picture-in-picture. He’s going to stick Gary Hart’s Golden Spike where the sun don’t shine. Royal & Schroeder are cheating, entering the ring behind the referee’s back without tagging; hair pulling. Since I’ve never seen anyone else mention this, Royal and Bill Howard were Greg Valentine’s seconds at Starrcade. Piper had Vinnie Valentino and Brickhouse Brown. No storyline reason. The four of them returned to the back after the start of the match. An even match, but Youngblood pins Royal after reversing a whip into the corner. Youngblood catches Royal with a chop for the win. 

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Rufus R. Jones; Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood
Rufus is complimentary about teaming with Mark Youngblood. He still has attention focused on Dick Slater and the Mid-Atlantic title. Caudle asks Steamboat & Youngblood about The Road Warriors. Youngblood says they may be bigger, but once they get the gas going… Youngblood isn’t making much sense. He says he can paint his face too. Steamboat is more coherent. He says bring it.

Caudle signs off, but his line may have been cut off by the Network.

Jace Crockett is listed as the director. Wow, they’ve been cycling through directors for the last few shows. Educated guess that Jace is a son one of the Crocketts.

Match 1
Rufus R. Jones & Mark Youngblood d. Golden Boy Grey & Bill Howard
Tommy Young is the referee for the hour. Youngblood pins Grey after a double-sledge from the top rope. Quick match. For the last few weeks, the replay isn’t showing the finish of the match.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Paul Jones & The Assassins
Paul Jones says The Assassins are the uncrowned World tag team champions, and thanks the fans for agreeing. Jones is in the Christmas spirit and will try again to give away the poster of himself. He acknowledges the disaster from his last contest six months ago. This time, Jones will hand pick the contestants.

Match 2
Don Kernodle (w/Gary Hart) d. Pete Martin
Don Kernodle is back (not acknowledged, but he was in the WWF for the last few months). Caudle says Mark Lewin & Kevin Sullivan are gone, destroyed by Angelo Mosca. Caudle mentions Kernodle being a former tag champion with Sgt. Slaughter. Kernodle wins with the flying clothesline off the turnbuckles. After the match, Hart passes Kernodle an object. Hart distracts the referee, and Kernodle clotheslines Martin, who sells his throat. Sandy Scott and others help put Martin on the stretcher. Perhaps a cameo by Klondike Bill.

Match 3
Tommy Rich d. Magic Dragon
This was taped a few weeks ago (11/21/83 in Greenville). I believe this same match also aired on the same weekend of World Wide Wrestling. Caudle serves as the narrator. Sonny Fargo is the referee. Rich wins with the Thesz Press. No replay.

[VIDEO] Jimmy Valiant Music Video
Caudle throws it to a music video of Jimmy Valiant. He’s playing with people at the park, even drinking motor oil! At least the interspersed action is from Mid-Atlantic (and not Memphis). Valiant is also wearing the crown and waving an American flag while at the park. 

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Jimmy Valiant; Angelo Mosca
Valiant is in the Christmas spirit. He brings out a container of “Reindeer milk.” Most of the promo is drowned out by the Network edit. He says something about Paul Jones and The Assassins. Caudle gets a kiss to close it out. The back of his shirt says “Cold Stoned” something.
Angelo talks about taking out Sullivan & Lewin. Did they get fired or something? Angelo’s son will be here soon. But the Golden Spike is still here with Gary Hart. Ivan Koloff is coming back. Angelo has words for him. Looks like Angelo dyed his hair, no gray.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Greg Valentine
Valentine doesn’t want to talk about Piper’s challenge or anyone else. He is still the United States Heavyweight champion. That’s all he cares about. 

Match 4
Ivan Koloff (w/Gary Hart) d. Brett Hart
Koloff has the chain, banging it on the mat. Caudle calls Koloff the Russian Chain champion. He wonders how he would fair in that dog collar match? More hype for the Road Warriors coming. All Ivan. Instead of the usual knee to the back of the head out of the corner, it seemed Hart couldn’t get in the right spot. He just took a bump face first instead of waiting for Ivan. Ivan hit the knee to the back anyway, but didn’t look so good. Easy pin.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood; Roddy Piper
Ricky says he wants to end the year as champs for the fans. Jay says The Briscos are in secret training in Florida. They appreciate the fan support.
Piper says the reason he’s bundled is up, because his body is horrible compared to Steamboat. Piper says he’s lost a whole lot to Valentine, but he’s come back big time.

Match 5
The Road Warriors: Hawk & Animal (w/Paul Ellering)
d. Keith Larson & Gene Ligon
As soon as the bell rang, the Road Warriors attacked their opponents. A guest appearance, which was not unusual. Road Warriors also made a guest appearance in 1983 on the Mid-South show. Caudle is amazed about their look. They were billed earlier in the show as National tag team champs, but that wasn’t true, as they lost the belts earlier in the week this was taped. One power move after another by The Road Warriors. Animal pins Ligon after a rough looking clothesline. Caudle mentions Dusty Rhodes is coming in too.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Gary Hart, Ivan Koloff and Don Kernodle
Hart brushes off Lewin & Sullivan being run off by Mosca. He’s still there. Now, Mosca should be worried about Ivan and Kernodle. Hart warns Angelo Mosca about his son’s safety. Ivan wants to change over the dollar to the ruble. He and Kernodle make threats toward Mosca.

And, oddly the show cuts off. It is only 32 minutes long. Usually, they run 47 minutes. Apparently, we miss out on a Steamboat & Youngblood match.

Non Title: Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood [World Tag ch.] d. Gary Royal & Golden Boy Grey

Stu Schwartz is the referee for the hour. Short squash. Steamboat pins Royal with the flying bodypress.

Match 2
The Great Kabuki (w/Gary Hart) d. John Bonello
Kabuki attacks right away after spitting the green mist in the air. The show’s director is still having issues. We go to a picture-in-picture, with the inset supposed to be showing Gary Hart at ringside. Instead, we have identical pictures. A savate kick to the throat wins it for Kabuki. Replay doesn’t work either.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Dick Slater & Bob Orton
Slater is now Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight champion. He has some racially-tinged remarks for Rufus R. Jones. Slater says he and Orton will challenge for the tag championship. Slater throws a challenge to Greg Valentine and Ric Flair as well. We to go a clip from an unnamed arena, of Orton holding Wahoo’s arm on the ring apron, and Slater jumping off the top rope twice. Slater & Orton gloat after injuring Wahoo.

Match 3
Tommy Rich d. Magic Dragon
Roddy Piper joins Bob Caudle. The inset, working this time, shows Piper. He talks about Gary Hart. Meanwhile, Rich wins with the Thesz Press.

[VTR] Roddy Piper cuts a Starrcade ’83 merchandise promo
Tony Schiavone holds the mic in front of the blue NWA set, and with Piper moving all over the place, he has his work cut out for him. Piper plugs the program ($5) and the shirt ($10). The address is blurred on the Network version.

Match 4
Roddy Piper d. Bill Howard
Angelo Mosca joins Caudle. He talks about the growth of Piper. Howard goes for Piper’s ear, which just fires Piper up. He wins with the spinning neck breaker.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Jimmy Valiant; Angelo Mosca; Rufus R. Jones
Valiant says he’s back. He trash talks Paul Jones. Mosca says he and his son are getting better and vows revenge on Lewin. Rufus R. Jones vows revenge on Slater for stealing his title.

d. Don Herbert & Kelly Kiniski & Terry Gibbs
Paul Jones joins Caudle. He has mean words for Jimmy Valiant. Lots of trash talk as the match runs long.  Rufus pins Herbert after the “Freight Train” shoulderblock and headbutt.

This is in lieu of local promos. Kiniski puts over Starrcade ’83. He does his best to make a heel promo

The Assassins: 1 & 2 (w/Paul Jones) d. Rick McCord & Brett Hart
Caudle solicits comments from Starrcade ’83 and asks fans to send correspondence to a blurred out and edited out address.  Assassin #1 pins Hart after a top-rope knee drop to the throat. 

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Gary Hart, Kevin Sullivan and Mark Lewin
Hart doesn’t appreciate Piper’s comments during his TV commentary and tells him to mind his own business. He also warns Angelo Mosca. Lots of ranting over unfairness from Jim Crockett.

Jimmy Valiant d. Magic Dragon
Jimmy is back officially, as his 90-day exile ended Nov. 26. Tommy Young is the referee for the hour. A quick win for Jimmy with the elbow drop.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Roddy Piper
Piper is happy to defeat Greg Valentine in the dog collar match. Now, he wants the United States Heavyweight championship. He implies he’ll quit if he isn’t successful.

Match 2
Kevin Sullivan & Mark Lewin (w/Gary Hart) d. Rick McCord & John Bonello
Caudle runs down the current champions. No mention of the Mid-Atlantic tag team champions, as if it had been mentioned in the last six months. The heels take turns twisting Bonello’s arm until the referee stops the match.

Non-Title: Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood [World tag champs]
d. Gary Royal & Kelly Kiniski
Steamboat & Youngblood are wearing the belts. Caudle says The Briscos have return matches scheduled in a cage. Youngblood slingshots Steamboat onto Royal for the pin. 

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Mark Youngblood
This is in lieu of local promos. Youngblood focuses on Paul Jones & The Assassins. He will take their masks and scalps.

Match 4
Non-Title: Greg Valentine [U.S. ch.] d. Keith Larson
Caudle talks about how rough the Valentine vs. Piper dog collar match was, but Valentine is still the champ. Hammer wins with the Figure Four.

[Break] -Int. w/Bob Caudle: Paul Jones & The Assassins
Paul Jones yells about Jimmy Valiant. Some of it is bleeped. Lots of threats. He tells Valiant to bring a partner. Jones is about to cry.

Match 5
Mark Youngblood d. Bill Howard
Lots of chops by Youngblood. Pins Howard after a chop to the head. 

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Angelo Mosca
Caudle asks Mosca about his bandaged arm. He was the victim of the Golden Spike. At Starrcade, Scott McGhee suffered the Golden Spike and he is gone. His own son has been out for three months. Mosca has so much hate for Lewin. We go to a clip from Starrcade. Gary Hart brought out the spike but Lewin took it away and spiked McGhee and Mosca. He promises to spill the crimson. 

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Angelo Mosca
This in lieu of local promos. Almost a repeat of above. But, Angelo’s son has been out of action for only two months.

Match 6
Dick Slater (w/Bob Orton) d. Vinnie Valentino
Despite the graphic on the bumper saying the opponent would be Steve Muslin, we get Valentino. A much longer match than expected, as Valentino put up a fight. Slater gets the pin with a front suplex, followed by an elbow drop. 

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Greg Valentine; Dick Slater & Bob Orton; Gary Hart
Valentine has a bandage on his head. He is still the champ, not Piper. He glosses over Starrcade. The feud vs. Piper is not over.
Slater & Orton said they should be World tag champs. Next week, we’ll see footage of an incident with Wahoo McDaniel.
Gary Hart says Jimmy Valiant won’t make a fool of him. He who walks away, counts.

Note: We skip the 11/12/83 show on the Network, and history is a little muddled as to where the next few shows are taped. The broadcast and air dates are my educated guess. This show was taped prior to Starrcade, but aired after. No kayfabe breaking while in the arena (no new champions, seen or discussed, nor results given).

Match 1
Non-Title: Rufus R. Jones [Mid-Atlantic Champion] d. Tom Lentz
Stu Schwartz is the referee for the hour. We are past Starrcade, and Bob Caudle promises a special feature later. Rufus wins with a headbutt.

-Pre-taped Interview w/Tony Schiavone: Wahoo McDaniel & Jimmy Valiant
We are in front of the blue NWA set. Wahoo is dealing with the Assassins. He can find a partner, and out comes Jimmy Valiant, holding an American flag. The Network edit music drowns out most of what Valiant says. He does some rhymes. A kiss for Tony.

[VIDEO] We go to a music video, mostly of Valiant in Memphis, but with some Mid-Atlantic scenes thrown in.

Match 2
Wahoo McDaniel d. Ben Alexander
Caudle puts over how tough Wahoo is. A Starrcade feature is coming up. A chop wins it for Wahoo.
A new type of bumper, with a new font that we saw at Starrcade.

Match 3
Dick Slater d. Barry Hart
There are audio problems, that sound like an original part of the tape. Slater just punishes Hart throughout the match, winning with a face first suplex. 

 

LOCAL PROMO SPOT -Int. w/Bob Caudle: Scott McGhee
This is in lieu of local interviews. Scott says he has an accent. Ain’t that true. The lights on the set are not in full force. Not only can you barely understand McGhee, you can barely see him.

[CLIP] Dory Funk Jr. vs. Assassin 1
Caudle, now holding two microphones, throws to a clip of what appears to be Dory Funk Jr. vs. Assassin #1. Assassin #2 and Paul Jones interfere and triple team Funk, who is busted open. Caudle says that is why we won’t see Dory Funk right now. Not sure where or when this footage came from.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Paul Jones and The Assassin
Jones talks smack about Dory Funk Jr., saying he isn’t coming back. Assassin #1 warns people not to put their hands on Paul Jones.

Match 4
Bob Orton d. Rick McCord
Some mat wrestling by Orton. Caudle promises a special Starrcade feature coming up. A “We Want Flair” chant erupts. A fan is so enthusiastic, he literally knocks off his own cowboy hat. Impressive muscle moves by Orton, wearing orange trunks! A driving power slam secures the pin.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Tom Lentz
This is in lieu of local promos. Lentz says he is a former football player. He respects all the wrestlers in Mid-Atlantic. But he has no fear. Quite a boring interview.

Match 5
Mark Youngblood & Angelo Mosca d. Magic Dragon & Bill Howard
Most of the match is Youngblood getting worked on, and making the hot tag. Mosca takes over, and tags back out to Youngblood. Mark Lewin is now trying to get into the ring. Gary Hart pulls him away. Mosca finishes Dragon with a boot to the chest and an elbow drop. 

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Wahoo McDaniel & Tommy Rich & Rufus R. Jones & Angelo Mosca
Wahoo is glad to have Tommy back. Tommy is smiling and playing to the crowd.  Wahoo is glad to have help against the like of The Assassins. Tommy said Wahoo helped him develop a killer instinct. Rufus feels good to be Mid-Atlantic champion. He won’t back down from Dick Slater. Angelo says his son has changed everything for him. He wants revenge on Lewin for spiking his son. Blood is thicker than water.

It appears there is a break, but in the Network version, we go to the credit roll. It appears the promised Starrcade feature was cut by the WWE.

Back to Caudle. Because of ticket demand, Starrcade ’83 will be seen in your area on giant color screen through closed circuit. He runs through the card: Race vs. Flair, Valentine vs. Piper, Carlos Colon vs. Abdullah the Butcher, Bugsy McGraw & Rufus R. Jones vs. The Assassins, Mark Lewin & Kevin Sullivan vs. Scott McGhee & Johnny Weaver, South American champion Victor Jovica vs. Crusher Ayala, Dusty Rhodes will be there.

-Ric Flair workout
Ric Flair is working out in the ring, with Caudle and Ricky Steamboat commentating at ringside. First up is work with Scott McGhee. Takedowns, switches, let them up. Flair starts with the spinning toe hold, and Dory Funk Jr. breaks it up. It’s his turn.
Flair and Funk work some shoulder tackles, hip tosses, reversals. Flair is about to lock on the Figure Four and lets up.
Angelo Mosca’s turn. Angelo with a body slam and lets Flair up. Another Figure Four, and we’re done. Mosca is up and shakes and hugs Flair. Steamboat notes Flair went against three different styles.
Flair speaks with Caudle, as some fans are at ringside in Starrcade ’83 shirts that look homemade. Flair says Starrcade ’83 will be the biggest night of his life. The four ladies and one man give Flair some gifts and a cake.

Mark Lewin & Kevin Sullivan (w/Gary Hart) d. Scott McGhee & Terry Gibbs
We go to an inset interview with Jack Brisco, talking about Race vs. Flair. Rufus R. Jones joins Caudle. He puts over Starrcade ’83. He likes Flair’s chances. Sullivan back suplexes Gibbs, while he tags out to Lewin. Two stomps later, Lewin makes the pin.

LOCAL PROMO SPOT
-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Gary Hart, Kevin Sullivan, Mark Lewin and Great Kabuki
This is in lieu of local promos. Hart talks about Kabuki ending Charlie Brown at Starrcade ’83. Sullivan and Lewin are acting like goofs. Sullivan tells a lame joke, as the light goes out. Hart is perturbed. So is Lewin who starts choking his partner. Hart breaks it up and continues his promo.

Match 3
Non-United States Heavyweight championship: Greg Valentine [ch.] d. John Bonello
I must say, I think Valentine had the best robes in wrestling, even better than Flair. Caudle talks about the upcoming dog collar match. Jim Crockett Jr. booked it, despite vowing not to sanction it because of fan demand. The versatile Hammer uses the unnamed Camel Clutch to gain the submission.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Bob Orton & Dick Slater; Greg Valentine
Caudle reminds us that Starrcade ’83 is available in a location near us. Not mentioned here, but he is no longer Bob Orton Jr., just Bob Orton. I believe he cut a promo (probably on World Wide Wrestling) that he was way better than his father. Orton is excited for Starrcade. He and Slater will be there. Slater says Starrcade will be the biggest day wrestling has ever seen. In comes Valentine. Valentine says he’s a man, and will always honor his contract. Treat me like an animal, and that’s how I’ll act. He’ll hurt Piper.

Match 4
The Assassins (w/Paul Jones) NC Rick McCord & Keith Larson
The Assassins are dominating. The crowd pops, because Charlie Brown and Wahoo McDaniel stroll to ringside. The Assassins step outside. There is a challenge, and the Assassins accept.

Match 5
Charlie Brown & Wahoo McDaniel NC The Assassins (w/Paul Jones)
We have an impromptu match.  That’s a wild Indian we have in the ring right now, Caudle says. Caudle thinks Paul Jones put something in Assassin 1’s mask. A headbutt, and Wahoo is weakened. The masked team takes over. Wahoo fights his way back, but an A1 headbutt sends him back down. Wahoo is busted open. He fights back and tags out to Charlie Brown. House of Fire. Sleeper on A1. But A2 knees him from behind. A four-man brawl in the ring. Wahoo is ripping at A1’s mask. Wahoo chases after Paul Jones. More A1 mask ripping. He is grabbed by Paul Jones and the heels take a powder. No result announced.

Rick Steamboat & Jay Youngblood d. Ben Alexander & Golden Boy Grey
Steamboat delivers an insert promo about Race vs. Flair. Steamboat hits the flying bodypress on both Alexander & Grey, pinning both men. 

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Ric Flair; Jay Youngblood & Rick Steamboat; Roddy Piper
Flair is wearing the homemade Starrcade ’83 shirt. Caudle promotes Starrcade in your area, with a giant color-screen TV, and slow motion. Flair says they are all ready. David Crockett comes in. He says Pat O’Connor has a conflict of interest. He owns a restaurant and a ranch with Harley Race. So, there will another special referee. Steamboat hypes Starrcade. Steamboat wants to make this area a Fort Knox with all the gold. Piper is revved up. He unzips his jacket to reveal his dog collar.

Network edit music cuts off any Caudle sign off.
A better directed show, because Toby Jenkins is back.

Match 1
Non-Title: Greg Valentine [United States champion] d. Gary Royal
Caudle hypes Starrcade, and the two announced matches: Race vs. Flair and Valentine vs. Piper. A one sided match. Valentine pins Royal after a back suplex. Tommy Young is the referee for the hour.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: The Brisco Brothers
The Briscos have regained the World tag team championship. Not mentioned, but it was 10/21/83 in Richmond. Caudle says they are lucky to have them. Jerry is smug as usual. We go to a clip, I believe 10/23/83 in Charlotte.

[CLIP] Charlotte NC
Steamboat rolls up Jack Brisco for the pin. Angelo Mosca makes the count, and apparently Steamboat & Youngblood have regained the title. Caudle explains Mosca wasn’t the legal referee, so the pin didn’t count.

Jerry says that shows the prejudice against them. No more title matches for Steamboat & Youngblood. They won’t let what the NWA is forcing on Race and Valentine on them. They should call it Stockade ’83. Instead of Greensboro, they will defend the title in Kansas City against Greg Gagne & Jim Brunzell.
Jim Crockett Jr. comes out, and hands a telegram to Caudle. It is from Bob Geigel. He has sold the contract to book The Briscos on Nov. 24. And Crockett books them against Steamboat & Youngblood. Jack talks, and says Crockett went too far. Someone is going to get hurt.

Match #2
Dick Slater & Bob Orton Jr. d. Scott McGhee & Steve Muslin
Caudle really pours on the hype for Starrcade, the greatest extravaganza of all time. Lots of suplexes Orton & Slater. Orton holds Muslin on his shoulder. Slater comes off the top rope with a sledge and Muslin goes flying. Slater makes the easy pin.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Paul Jones and The Assassins
Jones is in his tuxedo, and the Assassins are both wearing suits and masks. Jones says Rufus R. Jones doesn’t have the hardest headbutt, Assassin 1 does. 

[CLIP] Charlotte NC
We go to a clip of Rufus vs. Assassin 1 in a headbutt contest 10/23/83 in Charlotte. Neither man is going down, although the ropes save Assassin 1. With the referee distracted, Jones puts an object in Assassin 1’s mask. One headbutt later, Rufus goes down and Assassin 1 is declared the winner.

[VTR] Comments from Dusty Rhodes
Dusty is in front of the blue NWA set. He cuts a promo for Starrcade. It’s the event not of the year or decade, but of the Starrcade! Dusty will be there watching in his private box. He still has one dream left.

Match 3
Great Kabuki [NWA TV champion] (w/Gary Hart) d. John Bonello
No indication if this is a TV title match or not. Kabuki wins with a chop from the second rope.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Roddy Piper; Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood
Piper, with a dark plaid sports coat, talks about his match versus Valentine. He’s said his family has had to go through a lot. It’s a matter of pride. Steamboat and Youngblood, also dressed up, look forward to their Starrcade match versus the Briscos.

Mosca talks about the pride he has in his son, Angelo. 

[VTR] Championship Wrestling from Florida
We go to a clip from Florida. Mosca wins an amateur challenged from The Pro, a masked man managed by James J. Dillon. Dillon is upset, and The Pro lives up to a prematch stipulation and reveals himself to be Les Thornton. Now, a second clip sees Sullivan & Lewin attacking Barry Windham. Young Angelo takes the Golden Spike that was meant for older Angelo.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Ric Flair
Flair offers a few words about his Starrcade match against Race. He stays around for commentary on the next match.

Match 4
Charlie Brown & Rufus R. Jones & Dory Funk Jr.
defeat Tom Lentz & Kelly Kiniski & Bill Howard
Flair is rather subdued, alternating between paying attention to the match and his battle against Race. Rufus hits the Freight Train shoulder tackle, followed by Funk forcing Lentz to submit to the spinning toe hold. 

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Greg Valentine; Mark Lewin & Kevin Sullivan and Gary Hart
Valentine is still irate. He’s a man, not an animal. That U.S. title belt is looking worn though. (Side note: lots of mistakes from the director on this show. The credits say it is Jeff Allen. Toby Jenkins normally directs the show.) Hart says he had nothing to do with young Mosca getting attacked. Sullivan interrupts. He talks trash about both Moscas. Both men continue to look at the wrong camera, and the director doesn’t fix it. Hart goes onto a rant, and Mosca comes out and takes out all three of them. Instead of sticking with the brawl, we go to a still shot of Charlie Brown to close the show.

Watch the top of the show, bottom of the screen. A big fan seems perturbed he can’t be in the front row because of the cameraman. Stu Schwartz is the referee for the hour. Caudle promises more info on Starrcade ’83. Some good mat wrestling here. Chavo backflips over Royal, then finishes him off with the Victory Roll.

Caudle throws to a clip of the Starrcade ’83 news conference from last week. All but the reaction from Race and Flair.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Jim Crockett Jr.
Crockett thanks the fans for making this possible. This will be the most spectacular wrestling event ever. The fans want to see a match he would never sanction. But, since the fans want it, and NWA President Bob Geigel approved, we will have Greg Valentine vs. Roddy Piper in a dog collar match.

[VIDEO TAPE] World Wide Wrestling
Ric Flair & Roddy Piper & Mark Youngblood vs. Dic Slater & Mark Lewin & Dory Funk Jr.
This match is from last week’s World Wide Wrestling. Johnny Weaver is solo on the mic. Slater avoids Flair. Piper executes a flying head scissors on Funk! Things get wild in the end, with Flair eventually pinning Funk. We cut to Jones getting in Funk’s face for losing. Funk isn’t taking it. Mainly verbal. 

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Dory Funk Jr.
Funk says he’s had all of Paul Jones he could stand. It’s no disgrace to lose to Ric Flair. He thinks Flair will beat Race. Funk says he’ll get even with Paul Jones.

Match 2
The Assassins (w/Paul Jones) NC Charlie Brown & Bugsy McGraw
A short brawl. The Assassins double team Brown, which leads to a pin attempt. Dory Funk Jr. comes to ringside and pulls Brown out. Brown, unsure of where Funk’s loyalties lie, takes some swings at Funk, but doesn’t connect. Funk is now in the ring, and fights off a double team from the Assassins. Brown evens the odd, and Funk breaks free and does after Jones. Hamilton Assassin saves his manager, who escapes. The Assassins escape too. Post-match action a little disjointed.

Match 3
Non-Title: The Great Kabuki [NWA TV ch.] (w/Gary Hart) d. Steve Muslin
Assuming non-title, since no mention of this being a title shot. At least the belt is there. First Kabuki appearance in a few weeks. Caudle reminds us that Kabuki is the one who defeated Jimmy Valiant, forcing him out of town. Kabuki wins with a chop from the second rope.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Ric Flair and Roddy Piper
Both men are in suits. Piper is happy to get his dog collar match versus Valentine. Somewhat bland interview for the men involved.

We Want Flair chant from the fans. Caudle hyping Starrcade ’83. Orton pins McCord following the superplex.

Kevin Sullivan (w/Gary Hart & Mark Lewin) d. Tim Gerrard
First appearance for Gerrard. Caudle makes the point (again) that Hart promised the promoters he can control Sullivan & Lewin. Caudle has his doubts. More Starrcade talk. Sullivan wins after a double stomp to Gerrard’s gut. 

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Greg Valentine; Paul Jones and The Assassins
Valentine, looking good in a suit, is livid he must wrestle in a dog collar match. They gave Piper a lethal weapon! He compares his situation to Harley Race. But, he’s The Hammer, he’s a man, and he’ll fight tooth and nail.

Jones says Dory Funk Jr. is a nut. He would fight, but he didn’t want to ruin his tuxedo. Jones turns his attention to Jimmy Valiant. He knows he’s not Charlie Brown. Don’t stick your nose in The Assassins’ business (and the four-year feud is about to begin). Hamilton Assassin says he’s angry. Don’t put your hands on their masks or Jones. Assassin manages to sneak in a middle finer.

“So long for now!”

Match 1
Non-Title: Rick Steamboat & Jay Youngblood [World Tag ch.] d. Bill Howard & Magic Dragon
Tommy Young is the referee for the hour. Caudle says to beware of the Briscos. Steamboat misses a flying a bodypress on Howard. More of a botch than anything else. They recover. Steamboat tries again a few minutes later and pins Howard after a top-rope flying body press.

SPECIAL VIDEO FEATURE
Championship Wrestling from Florida - Starrcade '83 Press Conference Coverage
Barbara Clarey reports from outside the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Tampa. The NWA Board of Directors is meeting to arrange a Race vs. Flair rematch. It will take place in a cage with no DQ. The promoters are determining where the match will take place. Clarey notes that Tampa Bay has been selected to host Super Bowl XVIII. Clarey throws it to Gordon Solie inside.

Gordon is reporting from the corner of the room. We see Eddie Graham, Hiro Matsuda, Bill Alfonso, and Buddy Colt on one side of the table. Jim Crockett Jr. and two others are on the other side. NWA president Bob Geigel walks in. He announces the match has been awarded to Jim Crockett. Jim speaks. There are three mic flags at the table, Ch. 10, 13 and 11 in Tampa. Crockett calls this more than the fight of the decade. He says this will take place in Greensboro on Thanksgiving. He’s going to call it Starrcade ’83.

Solie throws it via satellite to Harley Race in Kansas City
David Manning from KTVT Ch. 11 approaches Race who just arrived at the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum. Of course, this is Fort Worth, not Kansas City (taped 10/03/83 in a bit of meaningless trivia). Why let those facts get in the way. Manning, normally the referee for World Class, plays the role of TV reporter. He asks Race for his reaction to the match being signed in Greensboro. Race says he knew this was going to happen. He had his people bidding on the match, but Crockett came up with more cash. But, if that’s the way it is, that’s the way it will be. Flair may have just signed his final match. Manning doesn’t even know where the camera is when concluding the segment.

Solie then throws to a satellite to Ric Flair’s home in Charlotte.

Low and behold, it’s Tony Schiavone! It's his first appearance during the body of the Mid-Atlantic show. Flair says he has a flare for the nice things in a life. He says he has a “Flare for the Gold.”

Back to Gordon Solie. He repeats Flair’s line. Jim Crockett wraps up thanking the NWA for granting his promotion the title match.

Match 2
Dick Slater d. Steve Muslin
Thanks to the bumper graphic, the official spelling is Muslin. His real name is spelled Musulin. We get an inset interview for the first time on this program, with Bob Orton Jr. He says he may take Flair out again before his Starrcade ’83 match. Race having to wrestle in a cage is a disgrace. Slater uses a double hammerlock at one point. He wins with the unnamed Samoan drop.

-Int. w/Tony Schiavone: Roddy Piper
This appears to be a local promo for Savannah, Georgia, in front of the blue NWA set. Tony tells us Savannah has been selected host a satellite broadcast of Starrcade ’83. Piper has the dog collar and chain with him. He notes the collar has spiked studs to prevent choking with the hands. The chain is 12 feet, 40 pounds. This match hasn’t been officially announced on the main body of the show, indicating Savannah got the program a few weeks after the first airing.

Match 3
Mark Lewin & Kevin Sullivan (w/Gary Hart) d. Brett Hart & Vinnie Valentino
Roddy Piper is on commentary. He is mostly excited about Starrcade ’83. Lewin uses the Tree of Woe. Perhaps that’s where Sullivan picked it up from. The finish sees Lewin & Sullivan taking turns twisting Valentino’s arm. Like a maypole. And, that garners a submission!

A subdued Flair (compared to the last few episodes) is glad to have Race right where he wants him, in a no DQ cage match.

Match 4
Bugsy McGraw & Chavo Guerrero d. Tom Lentz & Kelly Kiniski
The return of Angelo Mosca! He joins Caudle on the mic. He talks about how big Starrcade ’83 is. Mosca has a big announcement coming soon. In the ring, Chavo pins Lentz with a victory roll. Mosca says he no longer King Kong, he goes back to his old self, Big Nasty. (A familiar moniker from his 1976 run in JCP.)

[VIDEO TAPE] NWA Champion Harley Race
This appears to be taped at the studio in Kansas City. Mainly, Race is unhappy and feels backstabbed he has to face Flair in the cage.

-Int. w/Tony Schiavone: Greg Valentine
Another local promo for the Starrcade showing in Savannah. Despite the heel interview subject, there is the blue NWA set backdrop. Valentine says the chain is 20 feet. He’s not happy about it.

Match 5
Mark Youngblood & Scott McGhee d. The Assassins (w/Paul Jones)
Third week in a row we see this match. The babyfaces start off fast and never let up. Hamilton Assassin and McGhee are fighting in the ropes. Youngblood whips Hercules Assassin into Hamilton Assassin. That takes him and McGhee out. Youngblood hits a legdrop and makes the pin.

Jones and Hamilton Assassin ram McGhee into the post. Then, a triple team in the ring on Youngblood. Hamilton Assassin loads his mask. Referee Tommy Young runs and jumps on Hamilton Assassin’s back. He gets flipped out and takes hard bump on the floor. Bugsy McGraw enters with a chair and makes the save. He nails Hamilton Assassin a few times and nearly pulls off his mask. The Assassins run away. 

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Greg Valentine; Gary Hart; Dick Slater
Valentine says Starrcade ’83 is a big deal. But, he won’t be set up like Harley Race. There is no way he will face Piper in a dog collar match [no continuity with the local promos on this tape) Hart complains about Charlie Brown’s mask. Slater has nasty words for Flair to close the show.

“So long for now!”

Non-Title: Greg Valentine [U.S. champion] d. Steve Muslin
Caudle promises some exciting news coming up soon. Is it the announcement of Starrcade? Nick Patrick is the referee for the hour. Valentine finishes off Muslin (or Musulin as his real name is spelled) with an elbow from the second turnbuckle, followed by a half-crab submission.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Rick Steamboat & Jay Youngblood
Our exciting news is Steamboat & Youngblood are the new World tag team champions. No date or location mentioned (10/03/83 in Greenville, for the record). Steamboat praises The Briscos, how hard they were to beat and how long they chased them. They talk about being four-time champions, tying with the Andersons (which isn't true. Andresons held the titles six times.)

[Break] 

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Ric Flair
Flair is still hyper angry, carrying around his bat. He looks like a blonde Scarface. We got to a clip from the 9/03/93 World Wide Wrestling. David Crockett is interviewing Flair, Bob Orton Jr. and Roddy Piper. Flair brings his children, David and Meagan. Orton holds David while Flair is talking.

Back to the current interview. Flair is incensed that Orton touched his kid. Sandy Scott comes out and tells Flair he can’t carry the bat to the arena. Flair reluctantly relinquishes his weapon.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Roddy Piper
Piper brings out a gift box. He says he knows it’s premature, but Valentine is premature too. He asks Caudle to present the gift to Valentine, but to say it’s from a big fan.

Match 2
Jack Brisco & Jerry Brisco d. Vinnie Valentino & John Bonello
Bob Caudle lists all of the amateur credentials of both Brisco brothers.
Jerry scored the win with the Figure Four on Bonello. Jack splashes Bonello’s legs after the match for good measure. 

[Break]

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Greg Valentine
Caudle presents Valentine with the gift box. Valentine knows it’s from Piper. Caudle plays dumb. Valentine reveals a dog collar. He goes nuts. There is no way he will wrestle Piper in a dog collar match. He storms off.

Match 3
The Assassins (w/Paul Jones) d. Mark Youngblood & Scott McGhee
Caudle says this is a return match from last week. Apparently, The Assassins used the loaded mask to win. A back-and-forth battle. McGhee is about to unmask Hercules Assassin. The referee is tied up with Youngblood and Paul Jones. McGhee hits a sweet looking German suplex. But, no referee to count the pin. Hamilton Assassin comes off the top rope to break up the pin, makes the switcheroo, and pins McGhee.

LOCAL PROMO SPOT
-Int. w/Tony Schiavone: Ric Flair
This is in lieu of local promos. We are in front of the blue NWA set. First time Schiavone appears on a WWE Network broadcast. Schiavone talks about Starrcade. Flair talks about his cage match versus Harley Race. Flair sounds hoarse. They haven’t mentioned Starrcade yet on the main body of the show, so some context is missing here. [Context is from the missing show from 10/08.]  Flair thanks Jim Crockett Promotions for bringing the match to the southeast. He won’t let the fans down.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Mark Youngblood & Scott McGhee
Mark is unhappy they got cheated two weeks in a row. McGhee wants one more chance. A no holds barred match.

Match 4
Wahoo McDaniel & Chavo Guerrero d. Magic Dragon & Golden Boy Grey
A one-sided affair. Chavo pins Grey with a German suplex into a bridge.

[VIDEO TAPE] -Comments from Harley Race
Race is in a back hallway at an arena in Florida. He says he will never return to North Carolina. He has no remorse what happened to Flair. Race says Flair can chase him. The word “butt” is bleeped out. 

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Dick Slater & Bob Orton
Slater says Flair is just a man without his baseball bat. Orton said if Flair’s kid had a bounty on him, he would collect on that too.

-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Gar Hart, Mark Lewin and Kevin Sullivan
"Markie" has been Hart’s lifelong friend. Hart talks about his men’s superior bodies. Sullivan keeps spouting off, seemingly annoying Hart.

This may be in lieu of local promos. Another Starrcade promo. Flair thanks the Crockett family. Lots of context missing, given the promo we just heard from Race. Wondering how these Flair promos got mixed into this tape.

Match 5
Dick Slater & Bob Orton Jr. NC Keith Larson & Rick McCord
On the prior bumper, a long-term question finally gets answered. The correct spelling is Larson, not Larsen. About a minute into the match, Flair charges into the ring with a broomstick. The referee gets the stick away, and Flair is taking care of Orton & Slater. Wahoo comes in to help Flair. The brawl continues.

The overdub music plays, and the credits roll as the brawl continues. The video freeze frames, which is kind of odd.
