Mail Bag: Kings Gym in Charlotte and Lexington 1962

We particularly enjoyed these two recent emails to the Mid-Atlantic Gateway. We always like hearing from folks with their wrestling memories. We love the smallest details.

THE KING'S GYM IN CHARLOTTE

The King's Gym was a great gym on South Tryon Street in Charlotte NC. Been gone for several years. A lot of wrestlers worked out there, from Larry Zbyszko to the Sheep Herders/Bushwackers to Lex Luger. I remember once the lady at the front desk announced over the loud speaker... "Mr. Barbarian, you have a phone call, Mr. Barbarian."  Mr. Barbarian!!!

And I remember once I was struggling with my last rep with some heavy dumbbells and a pair of huge hands grabbed my wrists and help me finish. It was the Warlord. What a great place and what great memories.

TELEPHONE POLES & STORE WINDOWS:
LEXINGTON WRESTLING,  1962

This poster was about 15 months before Wrestling was on WGHP.  Promotions were primarily done with event posters on telephone poles and in the windows of local merchants. Lexington usually had a good crowd every Saturday night. Before the matches there was also an autograph table.

Most stores were closed on Sundays and teens anxiously awaited going to the local merchants asking for an event’s poster after school on Monday.
