Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling
Original broadcast: 07/23/83
(taped 7/13/83 in Charlotte, NC; Charlotte Park Center)
From the now defunct WWE Network (U.S.) feed.
-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Rick Steamboat & Jay Youngblood
Just as soon as Caudle welcomes us to the show, Steamboat & Youngblood come in. A subdued Steamboat almost dares The Brisco Brothers to interrupt. Youngblood notes how they knocked out Jerry because they hit him in his bald spot.
Match 1
Rick Steamboat & Jay Youngblood d. Bill Howard & Masa Fuchi
Stu Schwartz is the referee for the hour. Mike Rotundo joins in for commentary. Youngblood forces Fuchi to submit to a kneebar/bridge combo.
[Break]
-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Paul Jones & Dory Funk Jr.
Paul Jones is still hot at Rufus R. Jones. Dory is wearing a suit and tie. Paul says the $100,000 challenge is still on. He has a check written out to Rufus, if he can beat Dory in 10 minutes.
-Int. Greg Valentine
[FILM] Roddy Piper vs. Greg Valentine
We go to a clip of a Valentine vs. Piper match from an unnamed arena (7/09/83 Charlotte Coliseum). They are bloody and brawling on the floor. Piper brings in the guardrail rope in the ring and chokes out Valentine. Other wrestlers, including Gene Anderson, try to stop Piper. Valentine is foaming at the mouth. He complains about the brutality. Valentine called his New York attorney Sammy Bingart for help. As a result, Piper has been suspended.
[Break]
[FILM] Valiant & Rufus R. Jones vs. Kabuki & Gary Hart
Same clip as we saw two weeks ago, 7/02/83 in Greensboro. Hart nails Valiant with a fireball.
Match 2
Non-Title: Great Kabuki [NWA TV champ] (w/Gary Hart) d. Mike Davis
No mention of Kabuki being TV champion. Davis gets a two-count after a body splash off the top rope. But, he misses a charge in the corner. Kabuki takes over and comes off the top rope with a chop and pins Davis while applying the claw.
-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Jim Crockett Jr.
Crockett says he went to the NWA Board of Directors and lifted Piper’s suspension. However, if Piper ever does anything like that again, he will be suspended permanently.
[Break]
-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Gary Hart & Great Kabuki
Hart justifies the fireball thrown at Jimmy Valiant. He claims Valiant threatened him. More threats at Valiant.
Match 3
Jimmy Valiant d. Tom Lentz
Jimmy has “Stars & Stripes” on the back of his trunks. A quick victory with an elbow drop.
[Break]
-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Ric Flair & Roddy Piper
Piper says he finally got a break for the first time in his life, with his suspension lifted. Flair said that would have been a tragedy. Watch out Greg Valentine and Harley Race.
[Break]
-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Rufus R. Jones
Rufus talks about the $100,000 challenge against Dory Funk Jr.
Match 4
The Assassins: 1 & 2 d. John Bonello & Vinnie Valentino
Color commentary by Mike Rotundo
Without much fanfare, we have two Assassins. #1 with a dropkick (!) on Bonello. Valentino is a house of fire, until #1 rams him into the corner turnbuckles. Great in-and-out teamwork with a hammerlock. The brutality forces the referee to stop the match and award the win to The Assassins.
-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Rufus R. Jones
This is in lieu of local promos. Rufus is still on the end of the Paul Jones Dream Contest. He will get Jones, Roberts and Funk all at once, or one at a time.
[Break]
Match 5
Dick Slater & Jake Roberts (w/Paul Jones) d. Brett Hart & Joel Deaton
Hart is holding his own with Slater, but Caudle keeps calling him Deaton. Caudle spends much of the match recapping the action we’ve seen in the hour. Slater pins Hart following the back suplex.
-Int. w/Bob Caudle: Jack Brisco & Jerry Brisco
Jerry replies to the Steamboat & Youngblood interview from the top of the show. He takes offense to being called a thief. They try to follow the rules.
“So long for now!”
